“Trade is disabled” – what does the error message mean? #

“Trade is disabled” is usually due to one of the following three scenarios, which cannot be circumvented by the trader either manually or via Expert Advisor:

  1. Broker has deactivated trading at the moment, e.g. due to a holiday, force majeure or preparation of a daily or monthly trade report. Or because of an unusually illiquid market, e.g. before an important data release or simply before the opening of the reference market (especially possible with stock indices). You do receive ticks because the broker’s liquidity providers are active. Therefore, the EA calculates on each tick and possibly generates signals, then wants to trade. But if the broker has just switched off trading, it still doesn’t work and your MT4 gives you the error message “Trade is disabled”. Solution: Contact the broker and ask when trading is allowed again.
  2. Your account is not activated. The same applies: Your MT4 receives ticks, EA calculates and may want to trade, but trades are not possible. Solution: Contact the broker and ask how you can activate the account.
  3. The trading symbol is not tradeable. For example, a broker may offer the EURUSD and EURUSD.r symbols. Both are available in MT4, but only one of the two can be traded, depending on the account type. The non-tradable symbols are usually displayed in grey in the market window. Solution: In this case, simply select the other, non-grey symbol.
